To start off this blog I will talk about whether Dragon Boating is considered a water sport or not. I will argue for this because I believe that it is a water sport, even though I know a lot of people don't consider it as one. For example, some people think that it is very easy to do this water sport but it isn't. It's not just rowing a boat around the lake just for no reason. This difficult water sport has to do with a lot of technique and synchronization with all 20 paddlers on the boat. Dragon Boating is a human powered watercraft that was traditionally made in the Pearl River Delta, region of China's southern Guangdong Province. This boat was made out of teak wood that would vary from sizes and designs on the boat. Dragon Boating is a team water sport that is an amateur water sport. While competition has taken place for more than 20 centuries, it has been a part of many religious and folk customs. As Dragon Boating has become more modernized it has emerged into an international sport that began in Hong Kong in 1976. But as for history, Dragon Boating goes as far back as to the time where the original games of the Olympia in ancient Greece. During race season the Dragon Boats would be decorated and the dragon heads and tails would be put on to look nice. When the Dragon Boats are used for practice the heads and tails are usually taken off, and put away for when the race season starts again. Dragon Boat festival racing is celebrated and observed in many different areas in East Asia, such as Malaysia, Singapore, Riau Islands, and many more. The term Duanwu is short and referred to "double fifth" because it is the fifth day of the fifth lunar calendar. Legends tell that a man named Qu Yuan a Chinese government court official drowned in the Miluo River. As he drowned to death many people tried rushing out there to save him but could not. The people would beat their drums and splashed the water with their paddles to keep the fishes from preying on his body. The people would also throw rice into the river to make sure that Qu Yuan would not starve from hunger. This water sport was not just for specific people but for anyone to try it out. In the Dragon Boat races they vary from gender races, adult races, youth races, college cups, and the masters. These races vary from all different type of people and ages, it can start from a very young kid at the age of 10 all the way to an elderly person of the age of 70. In 1986 Dragon Boating was first presented in the Expo 86. Six boats were sent from Hong Kong to Vancouver to be used at the worlds fair known as Expo 86. The Chinese Cultural Centre Dragon Boat Association formed it's very first festival and races in Canada to use authentic dragon boats.
In 1996 the first (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships was covered in Vancouver on the 10th anniversary of the introduction to Dragon Boating in Canada. Ten years later in 2006, Toronto hosted the 5th (IDBF) Club Crew World Championships on the 20th anniversary of Dragon Boating in Canada. As early as 1945 Canada was infected with "dragon fever". Several larger Dragon Boat races are featured outside of Asia are in, Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa.
