Blog #1- Christian: Baseball

Softball have been around me my whole life. I was born into a family with three of my four sisters playing softball. Once I was old enough to play I joined the local softball club, Diamond Girls. I played for five years and put my glove away. I then fell in love with Major League Baseball, the Angels to be more specific. My first major league baseball game was at the Angels Stadium and I attended it with my Girl Scouts troop when I was about seven years old. I remember walking through the tunnel to find our seats and standing there...amazed! All of the people, the bright green glass, the clean field, and the players practicing on the field. Until this day I am still an Angels baseball fan. I love going and rooting for my team and making new friends while doing it. The 7th ending stretch is one of my favorite parts because everyone stands up and sings to 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' and followed by 'Build Me Up Buttercup'. Other songs played throughout the game include Calling All Angels by Train which is played during the pre game, Celebration by Kool and the Gang is played if they win, and whenever they score a home run Chelsea Dagger is played by The Fratellis. Another fun fact that I know about the Angels stadium is that there a giant red 'A' with a halo around, called 'The Big A' and it is in the parking lot which can be seen from the Orange Freeway, and whenever the Angels win the halo lights up.
Because I played softball, I know how the game is played but I do not know the history behind the Angels. Some questions I hope to be able to answer within the next few weeks include:
  1. How did the Angels become to be a part of the major league baseball?
  2. When did the Angels become a one of the top teams in major league baseball?
  3. What are some major struggles the team has had to face throughout the years?
Some academic sources that I may use are:
  • JSTOR; If there are any books or journals I will find them at this site
  • LexisNexis Academic; There are blogs and broadcast transcripts that I will have access to
  • ProQuest Newsstand; I will be able to access magazine and newspaper articles
  • Google; There will be many sources that will come from Google, some helpful and some not
  • MLB.com; I will be able to get recent information about the team and possibly some history
